Simple. Healthy. Good. That basically sums up these chocolate covered oranges. They are fantastic because you get a bit of a treat and can have as few or as many as you like. They also work well for parties and gatherings as a dessert finger food. Read on to see how simple they are to make!
How To Make Chocolate Covered Orange Slices
Step 1: Prep the Ingredients
Place a piece of parchment paper on a sheet pan and set it aside.
Peel the oranges, making sure to remove as much of the pith as possible (the stringy white stuff between the peel and the slices of fruit).
Separate each orange slice, then set them aside while you heat the chocolate.
Pour the chocolate chips into a medium sized bowl. Microwave in 30 second increments until the chips are nearly melted, stirring gently with a spoon or other utensil between heating cycles.
Once the chocolate is nearly completely melted, take it out and whisk the chocolate until no lumps remain.
Step 2: Cover the Orange Slice in Chocolate
Take one of the orange slices and dip it halfway into the chocolate, then remove it and lay it down onto the parchment paper. Repeat with each orange slice, being careful not to pierce any of the orange slices so as not to let orange juice into the chocolate. If juice gets into the chocolate it will cause the chocolate to seize (become hard and crumbly).
As you complete a row of chocolate covered orange, you can sprinkle a pinch of flaky salt onto each slice, if desired.
Step 3: Refrigerate
Once all the oranges have chocolate on them, place the sheet pan in the fridge for at least 20 minutes (or freezer for 10 to 15 minutes), until the chocolate has hardened.
Cooking Tips
- Don’t use any orange slices that are torn or pierced. The juice from the orange will get into the chocolate and cause it to seize (harden up and get clumpy).
- Try sliding the orange slices into the chocolate instead of dipping them straight down. This is especially helpful as you get to the last of the orange slices and have less chocolate.
- You can use wax paper if you don’t have parchment paper. Don’t just lay the dipped orange slices on a sheet pan as it may be difficult to remove them.
Recipe Variations
- Use a different type of chocolate! The recipe calls for semi sweet or dark chocolate, but milk or even white chocolate will work in this recipe.
- Try sprinkling different toppings on the orange slices! Sprinkles or sugar crystals would be good as well.
- Use larger oranges! You won’t need as many – only 2 or 3 depending on their size.
