This honey BBQ sauce is a go-to for easy grilling. It cooks up in just 15 minutes and works well for pork, chicken, and other poultry. Plus it can be used as either a marinade or sauce. Try it for your next family-friendly weeknight dinner!
If you’re looking for a sweet sauce for your chicken or pork, then this honey bbq sauce is right up your alley.
Your family is going to love this bbq sauce because it’s sweet without being overly sweet and works great as either a marinade or a sauce.
Our family likes it best on grilled chicken, but it also works on pork, other poultry, and even seafood (salmon or shrimp would be best here).
Better yet, you probably have the majority of these ingredients in your kitchen already, which is always a win.
It’s also a great dipping sauce in general, much like this burger sauce, curry mayo sauce, and apricot bbq sauce. All of these are great with some grilled potato wedges.
And this sauce is too! Just scroll down to see the step by step pictures and instructions, as well as helpful tips, to get the most out of this honey barbecue sauce recipe.
Grab these ingredients
(Note: the full ingredients list, including measurements, is provided in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.)
- Honey: don’t use your fancy honey here. Just use whatever honey you have in your pantry or can buy at the store is fine.
- Ketchup: you want to get unsweetened ketchup, otherwise the sauce will come out too sweet. I like to use Primal Kitchen unsweetened ketchup.
- Worcestershire sauce: make sure the brand you have is gluten free if your family needs that.
- Apple cider vinegar: you can substitute white wine vinegar if you don’t have apple cider vinegar.
- Spices: the homemade seasoning blend I use consists of garlic powder, smoked paprika, mustard powder, ground black pepper, and Diamond Crystal kosher salt.

What to use honey barbecue sauce on
Of course there are lots of ways to use bbq sauce, though since this one is one the sweeter side in general I would recommend it with pork, chicken, turkey, and even on salmon. But you can use it for anything you’d like! Here are some recipe ideas:
- on bbq turkey meatballs;
- over pulled pork or pork ribs;
- as a glaze or marinade for basic grilled chicken thighs; or
- to dip grilled potato slices in.

15-Minute Honey BBQ Sauce
Equipment
- A small saucepan
Ingredients
- ½ cup ketchup unsweetened
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp kosher salt Diamond Crystal
- ¼ tsp mustard powder
- ¼ tsp smoked paprika
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp garlic powder
Instructions
- Place a small saucepan over low heat on a stovetop burner. Use measuring cups and spoons to add everything except the spices to it, letting them warm up as you add them. If needed, you can put the honey into a separate microwavable bowl and heat for 8 to 10 seconds to help it warm up.
- Once the first four ingredients are in the pan, use a whisk to combine everything together, then measure out and add the spices to the mixture. Use the whisk again to combine it all and increase the heat to medium low.
- Let the mixture cook for 7 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally with the whisk, until everything is combined and the sauce has thinned slightly.
- Remove from the heat and either use right away or let cool then place in a glass jar or other container. If not using right away, make sure the sauce cools completely before placing a lid on it and storing in the fridge for up to 4 days.
