Grilled peaches might be the most common grilled fruit, and there’s a reason for that. They are delicious. The natural sugars caramelize from the heat and they soften up to the perfect consistency.

There are some things you need to know to get the best grilled peaches. Read on for all the tips to grilled peach perfection.

How to Grill Peaches

Step 1: prep the peaches

a knife cutting a peach in half

Make a cut all the way around one of the peaches to cut it in half.

separating two peach halves with a large knife

Separate one half of the peach from the other by gently pulling it back with you fingers or with the help of the knife. If using the knife, put it in the cut you made on the side of the peach (where it’s thicker than in the top of bottom). Press the sharp edge of the knife against one side (near the pit) and the top of the knife against the other side of the peach. This should help separate the halves.

Take the pit out of the other side of the peach with your fingers or the tip of the knife. Discard pit and repeat with the other peaches.

Use either a pastry brush or your hands to coat the peaches all over with oil.

Step 2: grill the peaches

putting peach halves flesh side down on a grill

Turn on the grill to medium heat until it gets to around 375 degrees F. Put the peaches flesh side down (the side you cut) on the grill using a pair of tongs. Close the lid, and cook for 4 minutes. Don’t move the peaches once they’re down on the grill.

When the 4 minutes are up, open the lid and flip the peaches to the skin side down and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes with the lid down. Remove from the grill and serve immediately.

You may have a couple of questions about grilled peaches – let’s get to those now.

ARE GRILLED PEACHES HEALTHY?

It depends on your definition of healthy! But seeing as they're fruit with a little oil, yes grilled peaches would generally be considered healthy.

HOW RIPE SHOULD PEACHES BE FOR GRILLING?

The peaches should still be mostly firm to the touch with just a little give, and smell ripe. If you use peaches that are too ripe you'll have a hard time removing the pit while keeping them in tact, and they'll also get too mushy when grilled.

DO YOU NEED TO PEEL THE PEACHES?

Nope! For this recipe you keep the skin on.

WHAT GOES WITH GRILLED PEACHES?

Grilled peaches are great:

  • on a bed of greens with some aged balsamic vinegar on top,
  • with some grilled meat, like my smoked pork chops or dry rubbed flank steak,
  • as a dessert (when not on a Whole30), with some honey drizzled over them or a scoop of ice cream on top.

GRILLING TIPS

  • Use freestone peaches for this recipe. These are the types of peaches where the pit comes out easily – the typical yellow peaches you find at the store are freestone peaches.
  • Don’t try and place the peaches on the grill with your hands! The grill will be hot and you are likely to burn yourself. Get a pair of tongs to do it. Same goes for flipping them over!
  • Get to know the hot spots on your grill. Most grills have certain spots that are hotter than others, meaning some peaches may cook a little faster than others. Likely hot spots are directly over flames and likely cooler spots are at the front of the grill (closer to the opening of the lid).
