This BLTA sandwich (or BLAT sandwich) has the perfect amount of bacon, lettuce, tomato, and avocado – plus a simple tip to keep your sandwich from falling apart. A great option for lunch or dinner, you can easily customize it to your liking or follow the recipe exactly for a filling and delicious meal.

BLTA sandwiches are such a quick and easy meal, and this one is no exception. They’re great in the summer when tomatoes are at their peak, but really you can enjoy them any time of the year.
This recipe is very basic, but still totally delicious. I like to make Traeger bacon to go on this sandwich, and I use a thick cut to make the sandwich a bit heartier, but any bacon will taste good.
If you decide to make a whole pack of bacon at once and have any leftover, use some as topping in a soup, like in this sweet potato pumpkin soup to balance out the sweetness, or in a salad like this chicken cobb salad recipe.
Before we get to the instructions, here are the keys to this sandwich:
- the layering – you want the lettuce next to the bread (or the mayo) to keep it from sliding around too much, and you don’t want the tomatoes touching the bread because it will make the bread soggy; and
- smashing the avocado so it’s more like a spread – if you keep it in slices, those suckers will slide out before you can say sandwich. Mashing them with a fork into one of the bread slices keeps the avocado sticking to the bread so it won’t slide.
Follow those and you can’t go wrong.
Ingredients
- Bread – I use gluten free bread to make this a gluten free blta, but use whatever bread you prefer. I love to toast it ahead of time, but it’s not necessary if you like soft bread.
- Cooked bacon – thick cut bacon is great, and I like to make Traeger bacon to use in this sandwich.
- Green leaf lettuce – green leaf works well because it’s slightly flat but still has some weight to it, but you can use any type (red leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, butter lettuce, etc).
- Tomato – an heirloom tomato tastes great in this sandwich, but you can use whatever kind you like best.
- Avocado – use half a small avocado for a smaller sandwich, or half a large one for a really large sandwich. You can also use a full avocado if you’d like to put it on each slice of bread.
- Mayonnaise – this is optional, depending on if the avocado and tomato will provide enough moisture for you.
How to make a BLTA sandwich
- Place your toasted bread (or untoasted if that’s why you prefer) on the counter or a cutting board.
- Cut slices into the half avocado and place them on one of the pieces of bread. Mash them with a fork and spread them out across the entire piece of bread.
- Place the bacon on top of the avocado, breaking it into pieces if needed to make it fit on the bread.
- Slice the tomato into thick slices and place them on top of the bacon.
- Fold the lettuce until it’s roughly the same size as the bread and place it on top of the tomato slices.
- If using mayo, dip a table knife into the jar of mayonnaise, getting a small dollop. Spread the mayo onto the other empty slice of bread in an even layer.
- Place the second slice of bread with the mayo on top of the bread with the lettuce and push down slightly to compress the sandwich together. Cut in half with a sharp knife or eat as is.
FAQ
While making a BLTA is fairly straightforward, you may have a couple of questions still. Let’s get to those now.
What is BLTA?
BLTA stands for Bacon Lettuce Tomato Avocado sandwich. It’s a form of the traditional BLT (Bacon Lettuce Tomato) sandwich but with Avocado added on the end. It can also be called a BLAT sandwich.
What tomatoes are best for a BLTA sandwich?
The best tomato for a BLTA sandwich is an heirloom tomato – typically heirloom tomatoes have more flavor than regular tomatoes. If you can’t find an heirloom tomato, you can use an on-the-vine tomato or a beefsteak tomato. Just stay away from cherry tomatoes as they’ll be difficult to keep in your sandwich.
What goes well with BLTA sandwiches?
There are lots of great options with this sandwich! Read through them below and see which ones you think your family would love.
- Some simple potato salad;
- French fries or tater tots;
- Chips or crackers;
- A bowl of soup (like this creamy potato soup);
- Fruit salad or cut up fresh fruit;
- Veggies with dip, like hummus or this roasted garlic cashew dip; or
- A side salad, like a simple green salad, a corn, tomato, and tomato salad, or a scoop of chicken salad
Recipe tips and substitutions
- To keep your sandwich from sliding around and falling apart, the key is to smash your avocado on one side of the toast instead of keeping it in slices. The slices are unwieldy and likely to fall out, whereas if you smash the slices, the avocado will stick to the bread.
- A sharp, serrated knife is best to cut your sandwich in half. The bread and tomato will cut best with a serrated (or jagged) knife and the knife also have to be very sharp to cut through the chewy bacon.
- If you want a heartier sandwich, try adding some sliced turkey or chicken to the sandwich.
- Add a fried egg on top of the tomato and turn this into a breakfast sandwich!
- Other foods you can add to your sandwich are cucumber slices, sprouts, sliced cheese, or pickles.
