This taco salad dressing is a breeze to whip up, requiring just three simple ingredients. Tangy lime juice pairs with sour cream and taco seasoning for a savory, slightly smoky flavor. In minutes, combine the ingredients for a versatile dressing perfect for salads, in tacos and burritos, or as a dip. It’s a quick and flavorful addition to your weeknight meals.
A taco salad dressing that has just 3 ingredients and takes only 2 minutes to make? Yes please!
I’ll admit, I was not always a fan of making my own dressings, but after doing a couple I realized how easy they are and now it’s pretty much the only dressings I’ll eat (white balsamic vinaigrette and homemade coleslaw dressing, I’m looking at you).
And this one is SO easy.
I absolutely prefer to make it with my homemade taco seasoning, which does take an extra step if you don’t have some at the ready, but you can also use it with whatever taco seasoning you have on hand. You’ll see below I tested it with several and they all worked with this recipe.
So read on for instructions, as well as some tips for getting this most out of this taco salad dressing recipe.
You only need these 3 ingredients
(Note: the full ingredients list, including measurements, is provided in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.)
- Taco seasoning – this recipe was developed using my homemade taco seasoning blend, but it will work with store-bought taco seasoning packets. See the note below for more information.
- Sour cream – just a regular, full fat sour cream. If you’re using a low-fat or dairy free sour cream you may need to cut back on the lime juice to make sure the dressing doesn’t get too thin and runny.
- Lime juice – fresh is going to be best here since it will have more of the tang that’s so good in this dressing.
Using store-bought vs. homemade taco seasoning
When developing this recipe it was tested with four other store-bought seasoning packets. I bought more, but didn’t realize some of the packets had wheat flour in them and thus weren’t gluten free (which I need) so I didn’t test those.
While not all of them were to my liking, the result was that all of them would work if you’re using a seasoning packet that you like. The ratios might be different (more or less seasoning), but you can still get a good dressing out of it.
Be sure and follow the directions to start with 2 tsp of seasoning per ½ cup of sour cream. If you want a stronger flavor, add ½ teaspoon of seasoning at a time, mixing and tasting as you go until it’s to your liking.
How to make dressing for taco salad
There’s really not much at all to this recipe – you’re just measuring out ingredients and stirring them together to make the dressing. But that’s part of what makes this recipe so easy and perfect for a weeknight.
Using taco dressing
Of course you can use taco dressing for salads, but there are lots of other uses for it too! Here are a few:
- On top of nachos – like these fajita chicken nachos;
- As a dip for chips;
- In a burrito, taco, or wrap – or in this this grilled steak burrito bowl; and
- Drizzled over enchiladas – such as these cheesy chicken enchiladas

3-Ingredient Taco Salad Dressing
Equipment
- Lime juicer
- liquid measuring cup
- Mason jar with a lid
- Small whisk
Ingredients
- ½ cup sour cream full fat is best
- 1 oz fresh lime juice from 1 medium lime
- 2 to 4 tsp taco seasoning
Instructions
- First juice the lime. Cut it in half and juice it with handheld juicer or whatever you have. Catch the lime juice in a liquid measuring cup and set aside.
- Use a different measuring cup to scoop out the sour cream and place it in a clear mason jar or other container.
- Measure 2 teaspoons of the seasoning out with spoon and pour it into the jar with the sour cream.
- Pour the lime juice into the same jar with the sour cream and seasoning. Use a small whisk to stir everything together until it’s well combined. Check the bottom of the jar as the sour cream there tends to settle and not get incorporated. Scrape it with your whisk or another utensil until everything is blended together.
- Taste the dressing and add more seasoning as necessary in increments of ½ teaspoon at a time. Be sure and mix as you go, then taste to see if it’s to your liking.
- Once done, use immediately or store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Notes
- For reference, I like to use 4 teaspoons of my homemade taco seasoning in this recipe.
- Makes roughly 6 ounces of dressing.
