Taryn Solie: Hello grillers, and thank you for tuning in today! I am your host, Taryn Solie, and I am here to talk with you about all things grilling and outdoor cooking, including delicious recipes and handy tips and tricks, all to give you some grilling inspiration.
Today’s episode is a short one as I’m going to tell you about a sauce that you have to start serving at your cookouts. It’s super easy to make and has just four ingredients, but it tastes so good you’re going to wonder how you’ve been missing out all this time. I’m talking about a burger sauce.
While the name for this sauce might have to do with burgers, it really works for a variety of different things. Of course you can put it on a burger bun or drizzle it over a lettuce-wrapped burger, but you can also use it as a dipping sauce for fries or tots, or as a dressing for a burger salad or bowl. I could even see dipping pieces of grilled meat into it, like grilled chicken breast or grilled pork tenderloin. It’s got a lot of uses and truly couldn’t be easier to make.
And speaking of, let’s get into the recipe! To make this sauce you’ll need:
- 2 tbsp of mayo,
- 2 tbsp of ketchup without added sugar,
- 1 tbsp of yellow mustard, and
- 2 tsp of dill pickle juice.
To make the sauce all you have to do is measure out each of the ingredients with measuring spoons into a small or medium sized bowl and then stir them together until they’re well combined. I like to use a small whisk as the mayo can be a bit clumpy sometimes, but you could also use a spoon.
A couple of things to think about with this burger sauce. One is the type of ketchup I’m calling for, which is one without added sugar. If you have a very sugary ketchup it’s going to sweeten the sauce and it might be too sweet for your liking. If that’s the case, you may want to add a little more mustard to cut the sweetness.
The other thing to consider is the type of pickle juice. This sauce calls for dill pickle juice – other types of pickle juice are going to give it a different taste. If you prefer the taste of other pickles, like sweet pickles, go ahead and use that but you may need to adjust the other ingredients to get the sauce to your liking.
And really that’s one of the great things about this sauce is it’s so easy to customize to your preferences. Want it sweeter? Add more ketchup. Want it more tangy? Add more mustard. Need it thicker? Add more mayo. Want it thinner? Add either more pickle juice or some water. You could even change up the texture to be more like a relish or Thousand Island dressing by adding some chopped up dill pickles to the sauce.
I’ve already mentioned all the different ways to use this sauce, but for my family, my husband likes to slather his on his burger, my kids like to dip their fries and tots in it, and I like to use it on my burger bowls. This sauce will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for at least 5 days, so you can also make it ahead of time if you’re serving it at a cookout or BBQ.
I’ll include a link to the full printable recipe for this super easy burger sauce, as well as the other recipes and resources I’ve mentioned, on the show notes page.
