Grilled Sweet Potato Wedges

These grilled sweet potato wedges are a cinch to make, using a simple homemade potato seasoning that results in a sweet and smoky flavor. Great with the typical burgers and hot dogs, but also other grilled meats, they're perfect for dipping into ketchup, BBQ sauce, or any other condiment of your choice. Whether it's a casual family weeknight dinner or a lively weekend cookout, these bbq sweet potato wedges are sure to be a hit.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs sweet potatoes roughly 3 medium-large sweet potatoes
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 3 tsp kosher salt Diamond Crystal
  • ¾ tsp smoked paprika
  • tsp garlic powder
  • tsp onion powder
  • tsp ground black pepper

Instructions

  • Make the seasoning first. Use measuring spoons to measure out the spices and place each into a small bowl. Use a small whisk or other utensil to stir the ingredients together until thoroughly combined. Set aside.
  • Wash each sweet potato under running water and scrub with your hands or a stiff-bristled brush to get any dirty off. Dry both sweet potatoes with a paper towel and set the paper towel aside.
  • Use a fork and poke holes in each sweet potato 4 times on different sides of each potato. Loosely wrap one of the sweet potatoes in the damp paper towel and set it in a 1100 watt microwave. Microwave the potato for 2 minutes. Carefully remove the sweet potato when done and do the same thing with the other potatoes, using the same paper towel and rewetting it slightly if needed.
  • Let the first sweet potato cool slightly while the second potato is in the microwave. Once the second potato is done, take it out and let it cool while you microwave the third potato and then start slicing the first potato into wedges.
  • Use a large sharp knife and a cutting board and slice the sweet potato in half lengthwise, then cut each half into half lengthwise again to form wedges. Do the same with the second and third potato and place them in a large flat dish.
  • Preheat the grill to 400F, then measure out and pour the oil all over the sweet potato wedges. Sprinkle 4 tsp of the potato seasoning on top and stir gently with your hands until the wedges are well covered with both the oil and the seasoning. You will have some seasoning left over, which can be used to sprinkle over the grilled wedges at the end, if desired.
  • Once the grill is up to temperature, use a pair of tongs to add the seasoned sweet potato wedges directly onto the grill grates, placing one of the flesh sides down. Close the lid and let them cook for 5 minutes, then use the tongs to flip them to the other flesh side and grill for another 4-5 minutes.
  • At this point you need to check the wedges to see if they're done cooking. Take out a toothpick and slide it into the middle of one of the sweet potato wedges. If it easily goes through to the center the wedge is done, if you meet resistance then keep grilling until the center is soft, checking again with a toothpick every 4 or so minutes.
  • Once the sweet potato wedges are done cooking, use the tongs again to remove them from grill, setting them on a platter or plate. Let them cool slightly, then serve with ketchup, bbq sauce, burger sauce, or by themselves.

Notes

  • Cooking times will vary slightly depending on how thick or thin your sweet potato is. Thinner sweet potatoes (and therefore thinner slices) may need slightly less time.
  • If you have a very thick or wide sweet potato, you can cut it into eight wedges instead of four to make smaller "fries" and to lessen the cooking time.
    Be gentle when cutting your potatoes. The thinner the wedges, the more likely they are to break a bit at the ends. Typically this isn't a big deal and your wedges will stay in once piece, but sometimes if they are too thin they can break apart.
  • Get to know the hot spots on your grill.Most grills have certain spots that are hotter than others, meaning some potatoes may cook a little faster than others. For example, on my Weber Spirit II grill there are spots in the front directly over the heat source that will brown the potato wedges more quickly.
  • The smaller potato wedges are likely to finish cooking the earliest. Still test them with a toothpick but be sure and keep an eye on these!
