Hello and welcome to the Grill Like A Mother podcast! I’m your host, Taryn Solie, and I’m so excited to dig into all things grilling and outdoor cooking with you. I’m doing this about episode to let you get to know me a little and also to give you an idea of what to expect with this podcast.
As I mentioned, my name is Taryn and I run my own recipe website at Hot Pan Kitchen (dot) com. There I post gluten free, paleo, and generally whole food recipes for on and off the grill. I started grilling several years ago, before the pandemic, but got into it more once the pandemic started. It was partly a coping strategy, a way to try something new, and also to just get outside and out of the house because like many people, I was going a little stir crazy.
Grilling, at first, was intimidating for me. We have a two-burner Weber gas grill and a Traeger wood pellet grill and I wasn’t sure how to operate either when I started. I definitely had my fair share of – some people would call them mistakes, I’m going to call them learning opportunities. But over time I learned and grilling became less intimidating and a lot more fun.
Around the same time my family and I got into camping more. I did a lot of that growing up and was a Camp Fire girl when I was young, but hadn’t done as much as an adult. I have a husband, who is an Eagle Scout and who loves to camp, and we have twin 8 year old boys who just can’t seem to sit still so camping and being outdoors was a natural fit for us. And with that came another learning curve of cooking outdoors when camping and not having all the conveniences of a kitchen.
So if you’re sensing a theme here, that’s because there is one. Grilling and cooking outdoors to feed your family and friends is what this podcast is all about.
My hope with this podcast is to make those things less intimidating and more fun, particularly for women. I’ve seen a really strong male presence within the grilling/bbq/outdoor cooking spaces, but I haven’t seen as many women represented. And as a woman who enjoys those things I know there are other women out there who do too, who are interested and want to learn.
So on this podcast we’ll be discussing ways to feed your family and friends through grilling and outdoor cooking, all from a female perspective. That doesn’t mean there will only be women on the podcast, we’ll have men as well. But the framing of the podcast, and the majority of guests, will be women.
There is a lot in store for this podcast. We’re starting with season 1, which will run through essentially spring and summer – prime grilling and camping season. There are a wide variety of topics coming up, ranging from cooking while camping to holiday meal ideas to even baking on a BBQ. I will also be doing an episode every couple of weeks on what my family and I are grilling at the moment to hopefully give you some dinner ideas for you and your family and friends.
On this podcast you’ll get tips, tricks, and general meal inspiration to get you cooking outdoors, whether that’s on a grill, over a live fire, or at a campsite. If you have suggestions for future episodes, please email me at Taryn (that’s t-a-r-y-n) at grill-like-a-mother dot com. And if you like what you’re hearing, please subscribe to the podcast and leave a review! It really helps other people find the podcast.
Thank you for tuning in and until next time, keep grilling like a mother.
